Devenon Tattler

Throughout junior high, high school, and college I played a MUD called AR (Abandoned Reality). In the winter of '05/'06 I really enjoyed one of my all-time best characters: Charelee Liverwort. With purple hair to match her purple prose, Charelee ignited the world of AR for a brief season by actively tracking and stringing together the events that happened.

Using basic Bard class skills, I created an in-game news gossip sheet (making perhaps 50 copies of each edition) and distributed them to the players, NPCs, and Admins of the game.

The King is dead and a portal to the dreaded Abyss exists just outside the city limits. Wild beats and demons roam about the lands, tormenting all who are unfortunate enough to make their acquaintance. Detailed descriptions of these hideous monsters have made their way to this bard's ears and let it be known that they chill the blood. But all is not lost. The city continues to remain defended due to the noble efforts of many brave souls. But much might will be required if reports are true that the evilest and viles of vile evils- Archmage Thaxis and Xaquar Blackheart- walk this land again. Facts involving the Kings death are muddled, some say he died screaming like a woman, others claim he fought noble for the life of his daughter- the now Queen Elana. It is said that she was kidnapped by the vile forces of evil* and she was rescued by a party lead by noble Lord Tsang. Other names involved in the defense of the city: the noble Amarin, the wise Rackbahuu, Azshan, Cotswald, Xisstyre, Gorvan, Eurasha, and many more. Already there is speculation about who shall rise up to take the Queen's hand in marriage to help steady the kingdom in this dire hour. Perhaps her brave rescuer Lord Tsang who is said to be tall and handsome, or maybe the aged but wise and level headed Lord Rackbahuu. There has even been speculation that King Angus's supposed lover Lord Roger shall make a play for such a position. What highlights this event was not just the oddity of the action, but the victim of the prank- if it was in fact one. A young blind Inali was searching for her companion, the above mentioned Tyen. Almost all agree that Lord Tsang Rythus has emerged from the events as the hero of the city, although there are a lingering few who still whisper ill things. It has been noted by some that the head of the Rythus house "has his eyes on the Queen... and himself." Despite these occasional blemishes to the good lord's reputation, he continues to serve Devenon relentlessly in her time of need. All hail the house of Rythus! Other nobles, however, appear not to have faired as well, at least in matters concerning their reputation. While things may be whispered about the house of Rythus and Dazui, the Cotswald name is outright slandered by many. It has been suggested that the house is having difficulty recruiting new people and that there is a possible overthrow by a visiting relative. Though originally suggested to be a sister, could it perhaps be Yren from Windrift, in town visiting his cousin Orum of Cotswald? It has been noted by some that the current lord's health may be in a questionable state- could perhaps yet another change of power be in store for the the royalty of Devenon? In less gloomy news, the charitable White Rose's period of mourning for the recently deceased King is nearly over. A celebration has been rumored, although such festivities may be difficult with the full hospitals the organization is currently dealing with. Suggestions of poisoning or possible plague have been bandied about by some but vehemently denied by others. The city is alternately shaken by rolling tremors of the earth and the booming voice of a bloody-thirsty lord. Conflicts between the Lord Cotswald and Druids, most often the notorious yet dashing Bividar, have been escalating over the last year. It has reached a point where the Lord Cotswald is rabid for the blood of Druids. In almost equal proportion however, his defense of the city- most notably the less well off quarters- grows. It seems that he swears a Devenonian life saved and bettered for every drop of blood spilt by a servant of Amja's. A direct quote on the matter from the Lord himself is as follows: "You bring me the head of any Druid ... I shall donate 100,000 gold coins apiece to [the betterment of the Devenon poor ]." Are many tempted by this offer? It is unclear. Sides on the issue have not been taken by all- many being inclined to observe from the safety of a distance and await the outcome of this growing feud. While the Druids put on a show of being unshaken by the hounding Lord, it has been noted by some that the rest of Devenon royalty are not as adamant about the damnation of Druids. While members of Lord Cotswald's House, such as the infamous Anshar, hang devotedly on his every word, those outside the house are less charmed. Lord Tsang of the Rythus House has made it known that his approach is a touch more diplomatic. The Lord Cotswald's feelings on his fellow nobility's stances: "I care not for what Lord Tsang, or any other of the Houses say. They are weak, and only come out in times of impending glory" Has the Lord gone too far, or is it about time that someone step up and truly defend this city of ours from attacks of flowers and foxes? Or maybe the questing Trundlar Gulro, from the city and driven with a plan not yet revealed to all. Sister city Phirezal is starting to shake the old iron grip of Mog, it is whispered, and pump new blood into her veins. The second generation of a secret organization has come of age and is striving now to re-obtain the power and position their fathers once commanded. However they face the same challenges the earlier wave of upstarts once did. The grip of Mog's power about the city is tight, and any deviation from his path that might lead to a more prosperous fate for the town's people runs the risk of drawing Nok attention. There are few names directly connected to these events, though sources who cannot be disclosed at this time adamantly defend the organization's validity and existence. It has been established, however, that the nobility of Ekur is being lead by a one Lalartu. Their intentions are of course nobly proclaimed to be for the good of Ellandor. Those unrelated to the cause, however, are skeptical- and that would be putting it lightly. Much criticism has been heaped upon those who work for the Ekur cause due to their time spent away from their home city. It has been pointed out that the rallying points are not entirely clear and that the relatively new nobility of Devenon that they are attempting to mimmic are not the best of role models. None of the Lords could be reached for a comment on the matter, nor any opinions offered up by filthy trespassing Nok soldiers. The coppery coated beauty going by the name Aradia and claims she is simply traveling and is unconnected to the Pujmaran government. Madam Aradia is just one aspect of a growing interest in the cat-people city from across the sea. It is unclear what the motives for these atrocious actions are, but the fact that he may be a Psionicist would perhaps explain some things. In the month of the Guardian, 1425- ironically enough- the attack was made although again efforts by the wicked organization were thwarted. Ever the hero to his city's people, Amarin successfully lead the charge to reclaim the honored corpse. He was assisted by Morph, of the house Dazui. Does this mean the filthy L'shar will finally learn their lesson that Devenon will not be toyed with? Both assaulted and saved by a large assortment of villains, citizens know not where to turn. One thing is clear however- it most certainly isn't the House of Rythus! As the wicked ones are want to do, the Devenon fountain was plagued by a bothersome low-life L'shar on the 12th of the month. Unconnected to the most feared Shadow Ward however, the creature had not their protection and was fair game to all. It tormented citizens and was in turn threatened and run off by the most unlikely of protectors*. Lacking sense or good taste, it continued to skulk about the fountain, assaulting innocent persons unable to defend themselves. A happy tale would turn at this point to the arrival of the Nuada to save the day, but sadly this is no joyful bard song but a chilling accounting of facts. Arrive, the nuada did, but with cold hearted bias, they turned on the protectors*. Knocking down those who would achieve some semblance of peace, the L'shar was left to run wild in the city. Here, the true tragedy reveals itself. For it was with cold indifference and lack of action that "Lord" Tsang greeted this news. Promptly notified by a winged messenger of the dire need of his Lordly assistance, the so called protector of Devenon did not even bother to arrive on the scene to pass judgement in person. Dismissive of his citizen's welfare, he shames both his House and the Devenon royalty he serves. Where is Justice to be found, if not at the feet of those who rule us? Though often mocked, Lord Cotswald at least is a man of action. But many agree, including an ex-member of the House Orum*, that these actions are sick and often far too much. Is there hope to find the correct balance of action and sanity within our leaders? Between chill indifference and rabid bloodshed can any of the noble houses remain poised? Perhaps one should look beyond those who front the Houses and instead to the noble, and as of yet uncorrupted, blood who are the true foundations for our city? It is now rumored the Bank officials are after the much battered psionist, for Vyxaggryth thought to drive home his message by cashing in on a 250,000 coin bounty upon the man. The 14th of the Twins, 1428 D.B. shall be long remembered as a day when lace and gems mixed with blood and serpents. The masquerade ball started off simple enough, with an overwhelming bounty of food and extravagantly dressed guests. Only the Lord of House Korbus of the other three Houses directly put in appearance, although House Rythus was nobly represented with the dutiful Azshan Ex'zl and the dashing Amarin. The lack of House Orum's presence was much noted, though not regretted. Lady Evalyn looked quite dashing with her opulent drapery of pearls and o' so fitting dragon mask while the young socialite Talianna looked equally fine with the ultimate accessory of Sir Amarin on her arm. The most interestingly dressed guest would have to be the mysterious figure claiming to be Xiahuo Xhun and masked with an intricate creation reminiscent of the Kobold creatures of old. All revelries and joy from such simple things were soon cut short however with the ominous calling out of citizens to the town square. Though many cowered in the Lady's ballroom, still dressed in their finery, this particular bardic author would like to point out that she bravely made her way to the fountain for the sake of reporting all to the citizens of Devenon. And what a site to report it was! Vipers writhed through the streets and from the sky rained burning pods of destruction and misery. Snares were dropped about the ankles of those helping the situation and those simply standing about, such as the Lady Evalyn for she did eventually emerge. Fingers were pointed and accusations few. The demonic Lokahal, who hours before had been innocently attending the ball, was blamed by many for part of the chaos. Cries of the newly proselytized God Raawn Mogh filled the air along with the doom and smell of blood. Though the vile L'shar known as the High Prior claimed it all came about by the God's will, many point to more easily visible, and punishable, figures. The long standing enemy of Devenon Bividar and the off-again, on-again city enemy Kalika were spotted racing about. Though the evil hag claimed to be "collecting" the snakes with her Druidic ways, *some* believe transition formed under her hand were not always from scales to staff but rather the other way about. Bividar's guilt remained un-questioned by all. Was the shrewish old woman and her flamboyant companion merely misguided, or has the growing cult of Raawn Mogh actually managed to snare members of truly devastating capabilities? Some wonder now, upon reflection, if the Lord Cotswald's harsh Druidic decrees were an attempt to stave off such a future we now face, or perhaps are to blame for alienating these wicked children of Amja and forcing them into the welcoming arms of Evilness. It was noted in the month of Fishes, 1427 D.B. that he was looking for a fair skinned bride, but this scandal catches many by surprise! How will House Rythus take one of their own being tied to such a scandalous name as Dazui? How will the young bardress often seen in Sir Amarin's company, the socialite Talianna, take such news? Will Sir Amarin be switching his loyalties? Lord Tsang and Lady Evalyn were both lounging at the town square, claiming to be making themselves accessible to the city's citizens, when they suffered quite a shock. Apparently the nobility was unaware of the conditions the every-day civilian suffers at the location, namely in the form of squabbles between House underlings and guards that often endanger the public around them. When put to question about the situation, the Lady and most notably the Lord were unable to coherently respond. Master Jherek in particular offered the most witty and barbed of comments for the public's listening, completely shaming the nobility and revealing to all the incompetence and- already well known- snobbish attitudes they contained. At the top, there is Lord Cotswald of Orum, Lord Tsang of Rythus, Lord Kolodor of Korbus, and Lady Evalyn of Dazui. But for how much longer? It looks as if great turbulent times are ahead as House loyalties shift about, tensions rise within the ranks, and new blood is brought in to the scene. First off and in the front of many minds, is the upcoming marriage between Sir Amarin of Rythus and Lady Evalyn of Dazui. Words have already been had between the groom and his previous Lord. Yes, I did in fact say previous for the noble and much admired Amarin is leaving House Rythus for the welcoming embrace of House Dazui. But where does this put him and the Lady Evalyn? Will she remain sole heir of Dazui's leadership, or shall the two now have joint control? Or perhaps, after the fiasco involving the Lady's masquerade, the marriage is a convenient way to find a Lord for the House to take over control. The city waits in anticipation for the outcome of this startling affair. Speaking of affairs, Lord Cotswald's involvement with ladies of questionable repute has recently been highlighted by a young man going by the name Neldridge Starrk. He claims to be the son of House Orum's Lord and has been seen in and about Devenon throughout the last year. His mother apparently "worked" in Carengoth and it has been suggested that the Lord may be bringing her back to Devenon soon. Could this sudden interest in rekindling ties from the past, combined with the Lord's well known ill-health suggest a dire fate ahead of House Orum? No comment has been made available by current members of the House Orum, and little is known of this young man, unseen till now. Brief encounters only reveal a violent nature, furthering his claim to Orum blood, and his take is female companions. Following his father's apparent interest in scandalous women, the young man is frequently seen in the company of the young bard Talianna who has previously been spotted in the company of the likes of Sir Amarin, lady-pleaser Thorgan, and the dark Lokahal. What of Korbus, some may ask? Indeed, what of them. While the other Houses mingle their own or are revealing scandalous histories, House Korbus remains idle and void. House Rythus, though cold at times, continues to claim the most admirable man within the city- now in the form of the stoic Sir Azshan. House Dazui continues to build a reputation of social scandal, ranging from shocking marriages to comments made by members disparaging their own brothers and ringing every so faintly of Nok mentalities. And of course one need not point a finger at any specific element of House Orum to mark it as every changing and "active". And so [most] the Houses continue to churn and boil, to the Queen's pleasure or displeasure- it remains unclear. How will Amarin settle into House Dazui? What will Cotswald's public response be to the man claiming to be his son. When will Lord Tsang manage to relax and not act like a stick in the mud? Who will spark some life into House Korbus? It appears that with the addition of the woman, and several others, Raawn Mogh's power is truly terrifying to behold. The city is under no immediate threat however, as the admirable yet modest Azshan patrols the streets and has easily deal with the disturbances thus-far. Fug has also thrown a punch or two, but lets not lose the focus here. Lilka howls praise for the Empire like a bitch in heat and it sounds as if her call is being answered by a growing number of supporters. Momentarily putting aside differences to attempt to kill each other in an organized fashion, the event had a large turnout. Each of the key players of Ellandor sent delegates in some form or another to impress the crowds with their feats of bloodshed and violence. The Devenonian nobility was represented with the dashing Sir Amarin and the stoic Sir Azshan. The vile Shadow Ward was represented by the demon Lokahal and not Warington, which many appreciated. Equally hateful cult of Raawn Mogh provided both its High Prior Vyxaggryth and the new initiate Kalika. Nok put in a weak showing of Nevhiron and Mathius, both of which withdrew early in the event strangely enough directly before or after battling a Raawn Mogh-est. Appearances were made as well by the sly Teldor and Lady's Man Thorgan, and Gulro who was the Ekur contestant. Not all made it to the end of the tournament, which was vicious and full of surprise outcomes. Raawn Mogh-est Kalika withdrew rather then fight her Master and in a battle between House Dazui and House Rythus, the young Sir Amarin managed a surprising win over the skilled Sir Azshan. None who fought through the entire event remained undefeated and come the final round, only Vyxaggryth, Thorgan, Amarin, Gulro, and Lokahal remained. It is with a heavy heart that this author reports that Vyxaggryth came away with a horrifying six wins to his name, making him the clear winner of the tournament. The Thorganator was a distant second and Sir Amarin right behind him. Reactions to the event are a bit muddled. Some rather vocal and pathetic complains came from the Nok quarter, but such things can be easily ignored. Devenonian participants as well as Lord Tsang who played spectator to the entire show seemed happy enough. Violent minds such as Lokahal, Kalika, and Vyxaggryth are impossible to interpret but the High Prior at least seems to be excessively pleased with himself. All agree that far better organization could have been had, an a more comfortable observation location with a better view is demanded for next time. The High Commander Zerbal has returned, claiming to be both her husband and determined to remove her from the cult's clutches. To quote the creature's exact words: "[it] seems she sold her soul and I will kill the demon that took it." No word yet has been provided by the demon in question, although he will undoubtedly dismiss it as he does all other threats to his cult. The Lord Kolodor met his new companion on a return journey from Dok'Mal and while no mention of the M word has been made, he attempts to charm her are evident to all. Not all are so fortunate as House Korbus and House Dazui in the matters of the heart however. Careful observation of certain *other* Lord could possibly reveal signs of heart-ache. Such things as neglect for old hobbies which underline a lack of companionship and long bouts in the public eye to perhaps search the populous for that certain special someone could suggest a man on the prowl for a mate or one mourning the loss of a lady love to another suitor. With all her practical jokes, it is unclear if she lost a large portion of manners while out traveling, or if she never had them to being with. Still, some find her talents and company to be a source of delight, such as the Lord Tsang to be sure. He has claimed a mild association with the terrible druid Bividar however, and careful watch should be kept over him for similar tendencies. While he has taken the head of High Commander Nevhirion, there seems to be little emotional attachment towards the welfare of those within Devenon.
